Pappa spent nearly all of his life living outdoors and his ears were ravaged by mites and the cold. They bothered him so bad that he would scratch his neck hair off until he bled. Thankfully, after a few tries, the vet came up with a treatment that worked. While his ears still look sketchy, they no longer bother him and these days he acts like a kitten again.
